Let’s GO to the Neighborhood – AMERICAN LEGATION

Located just 50 meters from Bab Merican, or the “American Gate,” the American Legation is the only U.S. National Historic Landmark outside of the United States. Morocco was the first country to recognize the U.S. as an independent nation in 1777, and the U.S. later played a key role in preserving Tangier’ s autonomy during its time as an international zone (1923-1956).

Housed in a stately five-story mansion in the Old Medina, it now serves as a museum, research library, and cultural center. It also functions as the Moroccan research hub for the American Institute for Studies (AIMS) and Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC)
