Although Tangier has a long and rich history, few landmarks embody this more than the Phoenician Tombs. Around 1000 B.C., the Phoenicians, or Canaanites as they called themselves, were the first to establish the city of Tangier, known as “Tingis,” named after the mythological figure Tinga, a goddess from local Berber legends. They were a displaced seafaring people who established trade routes across North Africa and Mediterranean, connecting colonies from Tangier to Carthage, Marseille, Cyprus, Spain, Sicily, and Malta.

While little remains of their civilization today, 98 rock-cut tombs can still be found on the Marshan Plateau. These tombs, later plundered by the Romans, now stand exposed to the elements.
