

The Assayag Synagogue was est in 1890, & remained active until the late 1950s, after which it was abandoned for nearly 60 years. Its restoration as a museum and cultural landmark, inaugurated on Aug. 19, 2022, followed the Israel–Morocco normalization agreement of Dec. 2020 as part of King Mohammed VI’s vision to strengthen ties with the Moroccan diaspora as a vital part of the country’s cultural fabric.

It offers a glimpse into the once-thriving Jewish community. Despite a current Jewish population of only 2,000 in Morocco, the global diaspora remains impressed with the country’s efforts to maintain
